In some of these kids, there will be improvement within a month, but they never complain if they get better quicker. This avoids disappointment. We dermatologists and our patients really are blessed with effective medicines for treating acne. The psychological impact of acne can be devastating, particularly for the young patients who are most susceptible to this extremely visible disease. Dr. Jan Hornets has lectured nationwide on the effects that acne can have on self-confidence and self-esteem. I educate them about basic skin care, explain how their medications work, and try to impress upon them the importance of compliance. I usually tell them, “It doesn’t matter what I do. If you don’t help, we can’t get you better.” I have them share responsibility. It is particularly important for teenagers to agree to a shared responsibility. The agreement must be between the patient and the doctor, not the doctor and a parent.
This causes whiteheads and blackheads, inflammation, cyst, and pustules. These can erupt, creating stretched large pores, unsightly scars and even post-inflammatory pigmentation, if left untreated. To effectively treat adult acne, we must address the internal causes of acne and take a long term approach with appropriate skin treatments and skin care to find a new balance for the skin to keep its own healthy, breakout-free appearance without irritants and harsh chemicals. Check for food intolerance first; inflammation and toxicity in the system can result from excess burden on the digestive tract or immune system, worsening acne. Any toxins that aren’t eliminated properly through the bowel can cause congestion and oxidation in the skin, as it is the largest organ of elimination. Specify your needs and implement a supplement plan according to your nutritional deficiencies. Include lots of nutrient rich, high fiber foods, fruit and vegetables, and essential fatty acids into your daily diet. Supplements like Vitamin A, C, and E complex support your system: these nutrients are antioxidants specific for skin health that help repair skin and balance hormones, increase elasticity and hydration, reduce inflammation, balance oxidation in the skin, and support collagen production. Healthy skin needs a balanced, anti-inflammatory diet complete with foods that are rich in nutrients. You will improve digestion and elimination, restore your acid/alkaline balance, maintain healthier insulin levels, and support a normal hormone profile. A diet to address acne is based around plant based foods, lean protein, essential fatty acids, and fiber rich complex carbohydrates. By addressing the internal causes of acne, you can work toward achieving an acne free complexion.
Laser resurfacing – Lasers are all the rage these days, as people discover their painless but effective abilities to remove scars, clear up skin and freshen everything up. In this method, acne scars are removed by laser. There can be a recovery period of up to a week and there’s a risk that the scars will return over time, but this method does work for more serious acne scars. Dermabrasion – In this method of scar removal, the scars are removed mechanically by a rotating disk that literally “sands” off the acne scars. This method has a few problems – it can be painful (the disk is highly abrasive) and requires anesthetic, and the scars can return over time. There’s also some down time after having the procedure. The benefit, however, is that the skin that’s revealed is often smooth and soft and fresh looking. Creams – There are a multitude of “acne scar removal” creams on the market, but few actually work to remove scars.
Acne sufferers would love to treat acne scars. It is the terrible after effect that most people don’t speak about. It can be just as devastating as the original acne outbreak. Some people suffer from scars from an acne outbreak. There are many acne medications and scar removal products available. The scars can be treated and the pain can end. The type and severity of the scars determines your treatments. Mild acne scars can be treated with a few home remedies and procedures. A Dermatologist may perform a dermabrasion. Manufacturers are producing creams and scrubs that mimic the results of these procedures. Dermabrasions and chemical peels can be used in combination with retinal or alpha hydroxyl acid lotions. Mederma is a cream medication that is available in most pharmacies. Mederma softens the appearance of scar tissue. Mederma is grease less and invisible. It is less expensive and discreet. Aloe Vera gels work to regenerate the skin tissue. Some studies suggest that it also boosts immunity.
